Food, baby and fuel banks

There are a variety of charities which provide non-financial or “in-kind” support such as food, fuel vouchers, hygiene products or clothes.

These are often referred to as ‘banks’. For example, a food bank will provide food parcels, a baby bank will provide hygiene and clothing items for small children.

These organisations are independent from the government, and you usually don't need to be claiming benefits to receive support. However, many organisations will work closely with the local council or other statutory services, and may offer to refer you to them for further support.

Support with finding a food, baby or fuel bank

These types of in-kind support are usually only available via a referral from an advice service or other support organisation. These include Citizens Advice and other advice services, statutory professionals such as doctors, health visitors and social workers, and some faith centres such as churches and mosques. If you have a support worker from the council or housing association, they may also be able to help.

If you are already receiving guidance or support from an advice agency or other professional, please contact them first to ask about being referred to your local food bank, or to other charitable support in your area. For example, you might be able to access baby bank support from Little Village – but you’ll need to get a referral.

If you aren't already receiving guidance or support from statutory agencies or other professionals, reach out to your local Citizens Advice or council to ask for guidance on how you can be referred to your local food bank, and to find out whether there’s other support available too. The support available will vary depending on where you live, and a local advice service will know what’s available in your area. Find your local Council or Citizens Advice.

If you have limited mobility that would prevent you from collecting items from a food bank, ask your local food bank if they offer a free delivery service.
