Mandatory training for first time prisoners

  • Reference: 2014/3541
  • Question by: Tony Arbour
  • Meeting date: 17 September 2014
In my recent investigation I found that in London 100k criminals with at least two previous convictions have returned back to our courts in just the last two years. Does the Mayor agree with me that whether it's basic literacy or vocational programmes, arming people with skills and qualifications will help them into jobs and out of a life of criminality? Given the Mayor's responsibilities in relation to policing and crime in London, would the Mayor lobby government to give courts the powers to impose mandatory training or education, where appropriate, for first-timers going to prison?
