Following MQ 2014/5912, why do you start counting apprenticeship starts from 2010 when your pledge was 250,000 starts from 2012-16? Do you agree that this is misleading?

Duration of apprenticeships

The Low Pay Commission 2014 noted that there was considerable variation in the duration of apprenticeships, with apprenticeships in England at the lower end of the spectrum. The researchers estimated average apprenticeship durations of between 36-48 months in the majority of countries compared with a typical duration of 12-30 months in England. Do you collect data on the duration of apprenticeships in London to ensure that young Londoners are receiving good quality apprenticeships? If not, will you consider collecting this information?

Higher Education destinations

The Sutton Trust recently released a report which analysed the higher and further education destinations of young people in London. The report noted that there is great inequality of outcome across London by local area and type of school. Given your involvement in London's HE and FE sectors, for example through the LEP, what action are you taking to reduce this inequality and give all young Londoners the chance to succeed in their aspirations?

Graduate salaries

The Sutton Trust recently reported the difference in graduate salaries depending on what university you attended. It was noted that the chance of going to a top university is nearly ten times higher if you come from a rich rather than a poor neighbourhood, and this will contribute to the widening of the gap between rich and poor as those who are already from more affluent backgrounds and attend university tend to earn more throughout their life.
