Working Paper 63: GVA per workforce job in London and the UK

Key information

Publication type: General

Publication date:

This paper outlines the work of GLA Economics in developing a methodology to estimate Gross Value Added (GVA) per workforce job, using a variety of publicly available and specifically requested data from the Office for National Statistics.

This analysis has two main aims; firstly, this can help us better understand the economic contribution of different sectors of London’s economy. Second, these estimates can be useful for undertaking project appraisal and evaluation, to enable an estimation of the total economic impact of projects and programmes when job creation has been used as an outcome measure.

GLA Economics estimates that the all sector average of GVA per workforce job in London was £56,687 in 2012, compared to £41,088 for the UK as a whole and £37,281 for the rest of the UK (excluding London). This paper and the accompanying London Datastore release provide estimates of GVA per workforce job by industry section and division for London and the UK across a time series; as well as estimates of GVA per workforce job by section for regions and countries within the UK for 2012.

A range of data to accompany this report is published on the London Datastore.
