    • Question by: Sakina Sheikh
    • Meeting date: 10 February 2022
Sakina Sheikh AM: Good morning, Fiona and Andy, it is great to have you join us. It is so important that you have both already mentioned the Grenfell tragedy, a nightmare for many, but a reality for the residents who are still waiting for justice. It is a pertinent conversation to frame the rest of the discussion today about building safety. I wanted to start off by asking you, Fiona, specifically, what fire safety measures have been introduced into the planning system and how are they improving safety for Londoners?

  • How are you seeking to transform the London Fire Brigade so that it is well equipped to keep Londoners safe in the future? Building Safety and Remediation (Supplement) [5]

    • Question by: Sem Moema
    • Meeting date: 10 February 2022
Sem Moema AM: Thank you, Chair, I will do my best. I am really pleased to see the work that the LFB does with local authorities and civil servants. I have seen your work helping Hackney identify buildings at risk and to put in place those mitigations. The Grenfell incident had a huge impact and has really changed the way in which the LFB has had to work. I just wonder that, following [the Rt Hon] Michael Gove’s [MP, Secretary of State for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities] on building safety and remediation around levelling up, how you think that...

  • Addressing inequalities in Coronavirus response (Supplementary) [3]

    • Question by: Zack Polanski
    • Meeting date: 10 June 2021
Zack Polanski AM: My question is for you, Mr Mayor, and then I will come to the Fire Commissioner. You spoke with Assembly Member Sheikh before about TfL and inequality. I want to ask you, though, about the LFB. What role does it have in tackling inequality in London? Would it be better for it to have a clear inequalities strategy?
  • Addressing vulnerabilities in the GLA and Functional Bodies (Supplementary) [7]

    • Question by: Susan Hall
    • Meeting date: 10 June 2021
Susan Hall AM: A very quick one, please, for Andy Roe. Her Majesty's Inspectorate of Constabulary, Fire and Rescue Services (HMICFRS) has identified several areas for improvement and I will talk to you at length about those another time. One, though, is providing practical training exercises at high-rise buildings for incident commanders and so on. You have mentioned 8,000 high-rise buildings in London. Can you tell me, have you at least sorted out that particular issue that the HMICFRS were concerned about?

What do you perceive will be the impact on London of housing related welfare reforms - including linking the uprating of Local Housing Allowance to the Consumer Price Index rather than rent inflation and introducing under-occupation penalties - given London's existing shortages of affordable rented accommodation and overcrowding problems?

These changes include the overall benefit cap, uprating Local Housing Allowance by CPI, bedroom tax (under-occupancy penalties), localisation of the discretionary social fund, localisation of council tax benefit, and replacement of Disability Allowance with the Personal Independence Payment. Can you provide a very general picture of the impact these changes will have on the people of London?
