Question
TfL bus fleet - diesel particulate filters
Please provide details (timescales and funding) of TfL's plans to both retrofit existing diesel buses with diesel particulate filters and to ensure that new diesel vehicles entering the fleet are fitted with such filters.

TfL plans to fit diesel particulate filters (DPFs) to 120 buses that pass through air quality priority areas by the end of March 2013.
As the new Euro 6 engine generation comes into force from January 2014, and includes a filter as part of its exhaust system, TfL plans to accelerate replacement of older Euro 3 buses with new vehicles from 2014 to cut particulate matter and NOx still further.
Particulate matter from the bus fleet has fallen sharply from 200 tonnes in 1997 to around 17 tonnes in 2011/12 following fitment of DPFs to older buses in the fleet. Further cuts to this type of emission will follow the introduction of new Euro 6 generation buses in early 2014.
