Question

Staff Sickness

How will introducing the Bradford Factor reduce sickness when the scheme may potentially discriminate against those staff with a serious long-term illness and those with a disability?

Answer

Date: Sunday 11 September 2011

The introduction of the Bradford Factor should reduce sickness absence by increasing corporate consistency when taking action over short-term intermittent sickness. It is not designed to address serious long-term illness, for which different processes apply. In relation to disability-related sickness, a reasonable adjustment is applied such that the trigger points for action are increased by between 30% and 100% when some or all of the sickness in question is disability-related, and this will address any potential discrimination.
