Question
Sharia Law
Does the Mayor agree with the Archbishop of Canterbury that some form of official legal accommodation with Sharia law in the UK is unavoidable?
Answer
The Archbishop of Canterbury's comments were widely misreported. There is no suggestion of establishing a separate Sharia legal system. English law has evolved over centuries to take account of society's changing values and needs. Its strength and world-renowned reputation derive from this ability to incorporate and adapt legal principles from a range of sources. In this respect and in common with other faiths such as the Beth Din for Jewish people, the recognition of the Sharia civil code for Muslims who wish to use this code in some civil and personal matters may be appropriate subject to the full and informed consent of all parties.
