Question

London Resilience Funding (Supplementary) [1]

The main thrust of the question is about the Government recognising the unique need to protect its capital city from terrorist and major incidence attacks. Is there any sign at all that there is any recognition?

Answer

Date: Wednesday 8 November 2006

Clearly, Chair, I cannot speak directly on behalf of the Government in relation to the question, but we are lobbying as hard as we can.

As the Chair has said, there is not only all-party support in the Authority, there is a strong officer recognition, including from myself, that the protection of London and the London Resilience expenditure which, quite separately from the Government's New Dimension spend, is not being adequately catered for.

Just to extend the discussion that has taken place, the New Dimension equipment provided by the Government is first class, it provides a capability across the country, but, for example, on 7 July, none of that equipment was used. It was all equipment produced for London Resilience, funded separately by the Authority. I think that is indicative of the risk assessment that we have made for London, that still is not being recognised in reality for the sort of capital city grant, which, for example, the Metropolitan Police receive, but which the that London Fire Brigade does not.
