Capacity Enhancement Projects (Supplementary) [5]
I did hear in your briefing that you mentioned an expansion or enhancement of three tube lines. Can I give you the opportunity now to expand on that? I am particularly interested in capacity on the District Line and whether, in fact, you have managed to separate the Northern Line, and whether this is going to be done under PPP or under some other financial arrangement. p
Answer
What I talked about this morning is the details of the upgrades of the Circle, District, Hammersmith & City and Metropolitan lines. The base of this is part of the PPP. So a new signalling system and renewed track will allow an increase in capacity, as all the PPP line upgrades are designed to.
What I then talked about, in particular, was new trains for the Circle and Hammersmith & City lines, which will be seven cars long rather than the existing six, and then new trains for the District and Metropolitan lines. Those will be air-conditioned trains. The base of it is part of the PPP. The enhancement of air-conditioning and the enhancement from six cars to seven of the Circle and Hammersmith and City lines are paid for through the TfL investment plan, and are additional to the PPP.
