Question
Abandoned Cooler tube proposals
How much has been spent on the proposed scheme which has now been abandoned?
Answer
The question is, 'How much was spent on the proposed scheme, which has now been abandoned?' My answer is, 'It has not been abandoned.' Work in this area continues; every pound spent is new and it has been initiated by TfL. What Tim O'Toole was referring to when he spoke to the select committee was the possibility, in the longer term, depending on how the Metronet numbers work, that we might not be able to do as much as we thought we could. However, the programme for cooling the Tube is very innovative and it deals with a whole number of techniques that we have not really used in the past, like the use of ground water. There has been a lot of work to reinstate a load of fans which were in disused lift shafts for ventilation and we are very anxious, in fact, to continue it, simply because heat on the Tube in the summer is a major issue.
