Introduction
Since the Grenfell fire in June 2017, the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government (MHCLG) has launched a number of programmes aimed at removing unsafe cladding from high-rise residential buildings. MHCLG publishes data on a monthly basis showing the number of buildings which are being monitored for unsafe cladding, and progress that has been made at a local authority level to remediate any issues.
Remediation programmes
There are several different remediation programmes concentrating on unsafe cladding. These include the ACM Cladding Remediation Programme (high-rise residential buildings with the most dangerous types of cladding), the Building Safety Fund (buildings over 18 meters with other forms of unsafe cladding), the Cladding Safety Scheme (buildings between 11 and 18 meters and 18+ meters outside of London), and the Developer Remediation Contract. The government also works with the social housing sector.
Monitored buildings in each region
MHCLG reports on the number of monitored buildings in each region. Monitored buildings are those identified as needing remediation due to unsafe cladding.
Borough remediation progress
MHCLG reports on the progress of remediation for the monitored buildings, by local authority. The data states how many buildings have completed remediation, how many have remediation underway, and those where work has not yet commenced (‘in programme’).
Definitions
- Monitored buildings: those buildings which have been identified as having unsafe cladding and are part of a remediation programme
