Wimbledon Greyhound Stadium

In his role of making strategic planning decisions for London, the Mayor may occasionally take over an application, therefore becoming the local planning authority. He must then hold a public hearing before deciding whether or not to grant planning permission.

The previous Mayor, Boris Johnson, issued a direction that he was to act as the local planning authority for determining the application. Since taking office, the new Mayor has now asked to review the options for taking the case forward.

Background to the public hearing

On 8 March 2016 Merton Council advised the previous Mayor, Boris Johnson, it was minded to grant planning permission for the redevelopment proposals for Wimbledon Greyhound Stadium.

On 22 March 2016, having considered a report on the case, the previous Mayor notified Merton that he would act as the local planning authority for the purposes of determining the planning applications (under article 7 of the Mayor of London Order and the powers conferred by Section 2A of the 1990 Town and Country Planning Act).

The Local Planning Authority reference assigned to the application is 14/P4361. The GLA reference is 3130b

Final Decision

Having considered a further report on this case, reference D&P/3130b/04, and having had regard to the responses received to the GLA’s public consultation, the Mayor has decided to cancel the previous Mayor’s direction that he is to act as the local planning authority on this application. The application will thus be returned to Merton Council for its own determination. The report and decision letter are available to download below.
