St Stephen's Catholic Primary School

Instilling resilience through a child-led curriculum

What problems were in your school and how did you identify them?

We have a diverse range of children in our low attaining group so to meet all of their needs proved difficult; this was identified through ongoing assessment and progress meetings.

What actions did you take?

We use the pupil voice to develop a creative and personalised curriculum to meet the needs of all individuals; this ensures pupils start at their unique personal levels. Underpinning this, is a culture of growth mindset and resilience, which is developed through regular coaching and the embedded use of higher-order questioning. The children are well-supported both academically and holistically. We work alongside our resident author, delivering weekly creative writing workshops that inspire the children and raise attainment. We provide a diverse range of sporting activities such as trampolining, martial arts and box-fit, as well as taster sessions in lesser-known sports including archery. This enhances children’s physical and emotional well-being, which is further supported by our programme of personalised therapeutic sessions.

What were the outcomes?

Through addressing individual needs, we have developed well-rounded members of society with high aspirations, resulting in improved attainment for all.
