St Philomena's Catholic High School for Girls 2019/20

High aspiration and ambition for all students, regardless of their background

What problems were in your school and how did you identify them?

A large percentage of low prior attaining disadvantaged students have been identified as having SEND needs. Planning and delivering an aspirational curriculum requires a differentiated and coordinated approach. This provides a real challenge.

What actions did you take?

  • Conducted an external review of the school's strategy.
  • Conducted interviews to gain a true insight into each disadvantaged student’s needs and used the outcomes of these interviews to create individual student profiles.
  • In light of the external review and student profiles, revisited our strategic intent to make sure the strategy for improvement was contextualised and met the needs of our students.
  • Planning for an individualised approach to addressing barriers to learning and emotional support rather than providing access to generic support and focusing on students nearing their end of KS assessments
  • Planned effective differentiation workshops for staff to improve their teaching practices.
  • Reviewed our curriculum to ensure it meets the needs of all and remains aspirational for all.

What were the outcomes?

Individualised approach to identifying needs enabled us to build on our students’ cultural capital whilst narrowing the attainment gap.
