BBC Music Introducing curate monthly showcases at The Lexington. This one is an all-female line-up with Kara Marni, Olivia Nelson and Tiana Major9, dedicated to supporting women in music as part of Sounds Like London. Introducing’s Abbie McCarthy will host the evening.
Kara Marni has been infatuated with music for as long as she can remember. It was on the school run while hearing her mum playing Minnie Riperton’s Loving You that her interest in music was fully realized. Fast-forward to her teen years and she’s set up camp in a shed at the bottom of her garden. It was here that Marni nurtured her voice by attempting to imitate the likes of soul icons Roberta Flack & Anita Baker.
From a young age, Olivia Nelson always knew she wanted to be a singer. Donny Hathaway, Lauryn Hill, Stevie Wonder, Frank Ocean, Prince, John Mayer & Whitney Houston each fueled that passion; leading Olivia to work with songwriters and producers ranging from the likes of Carassius Gold (Jack Garratt), John Calvert (Nao, Jodie Abacus) & Benjamin Miller (Reijjie Snow).
Jazz is Tiana Major9's heart. Although she fell in love with R&B and Hip-Hop first, her fascination with their origins had quickly turned from curiosity to a genuine obsession for this style of music. Tiana has always been surrounded by music from Gospel or Garage. She has graced many stages and blessed many ears across Europe whether it be on her own or supporting acts such as Ray BLK and Ella Eyre. Her song ‘Levee (Let It Break)’ was recently the BBC Music Introducing Track of the Week on BBC Radio 1Xtra.
