Apprenticeships are dependent on entry qualifications only but there is a significant gap between the educational achievements of care leavers and their peers. What support do you provide for young care leavers to start an apprenticeship in London?

Apprenticeships are a fantastic way of providing Londoners from deprived backgrounds the qualifications needed to compete for and sustain jobs in the capital and beyond.

I agree that care leavers may need additional support to access employment pathways (including apprenticeships); therefore, I fully endorse the SFAs traineeship offer which provides NEETs (including care leavers) with functional skills training and the work experience required to help them access apprenticeship opportunities.

Through my London Schools Excellence Fund I fund a project called London Fostering Achievement which aims to improve educational outcomes for fostered children in London.  The project brings together leaders, foster carers, teachers and young people to take part in various training workshops and masterclasses to support children's education and future opportunities (including apprenticeships).

We are also developing a 'care leavers into work' pilot funded by the GLA's Youth Innovation Fund that will support London's young care leavers into employment and training which will be announced in Autumn 2015.
