Question

The European Commission wrote to the UK authorities on 28 November warning that it would suspend structural fund payments within six weeks unless it receives satisfactory assurances that problems concerning inadequate audit controls on paying agencies in England (including London) are being addressed. Can the Mayor provide an update on the current position as it affects London?

As I said last time, the threat of suspension of payments stems from a complex series of issues relating to the monitoring of the 2000 to 2006 European Structural Fund programmes in England; not London alone. This is a matter for Central Government, Government Offices and the European Commission, not me. However, by way of update, I understand that the Department for Communities and Local Government responded to the letter to which you refer by the deadline required (9 January), and the Commission's response is now awaited.
