I am aware of Hackney Council's aspirations to improve the street environment and provide better facilities for pedestrians and cyclists on the Shoreditch Triangle. I fully support these laudable objectives, and can understand their wish to see the one-way system revert to two-way flows. However, it is regrettable that Hackney did not offer Transport for London or the Traffic Director for London any sight of their current proposals prior to approving them. Although keen to assist, now that sufficient detail has been supplied TfL has identified a number of serious shortcomings which would adversely affect buses and local access for shoppers and businesses. TfL's Street Management is working with Hackney Council officers to seek a solution which balances the competing demands of all the users of the Shoreditch Triangle, while still achieving much-needed streetscape improvements. Whatever scheme eventually emerges from these discussions would be a candidate for funding from congestion charging, but it is too early to give a decision on this.
