Located at the edge of a major crossing of the River Clyde, the City of Glasgow College Riverside Campus site marks a gateway in the city and projects the College's importance as a civic institution as well as creating a new landmark on the Glasgow skyline.

How does this show what we're looking for?

  • the Riverside Campus buildings are a world class learning environment and have been designed in a way that is deliberately open and connected. The buildings are organised around two civic spaces - a cloistered garden and a grand hall - which encourage students to mix and realise opportunities for learning across disciplines. Thus inspiring collaboration and encouraging partnerships. These two social spaces at the Riverside Campus act as the community heart of the buildings.
  • the campus has been meticulously designed and future proofed for the next 50 years and features industry standard, state-of-the-art facilities that will re-define tertiary education in Scotland.
  • the City of Glasgow College is the single largest estate development in the college sector in Scotland which captures the delivery of both the Colleges Riverside and City Campuses. Together they will provide 80,000m2 learning space for 40,000 students and 1,200 staff. The Riverside campus opened to staff and students in August 2015.

The college demonstrates best practice because:

  • the architects' ambition was to redesign the College’s previous setup (silos for different disciplines spread across the city) into a space that students and staff pass through on a daily basis, stimulating blended learning and cross discipline opportunities.
  • designed in a joint venture between Reiach and Hall Architects and Michael Laird Architects (and working together in the Glasgow Learning Quarter consortium), the buildings at the Riverside Campus are therefore the result of a combination of ideas about the city, about the student experience and about community.
  • the Riverside Campus has received overwhelming architectural recognition since its completion, including winning seven top architectural awards such as the Glasgow Institute of Architects – Education Building of the Year, RIAS Award, RIBA National Award and RICS Award – Design though Innovation Award. The building is therefore making a positive impact with industry and education partners across the globe.
  • the Glasgow Learning Quarter consortium is led by Sir Robert McAlpine Ltd and includes FES, ARUP Scotland, Hulley and Kirkwood, Rankin Fraser and Graven Images. The consortium was awarded the contract to design, build, finance and maintain the Riverside Campus for a 25 year period.
