IE: Integrating English into Enfield

Developing teacher knowledge around language in order to better support student writing and improve attainment.

Improve attainment in writing

The project aimed to develop teacher knowledge around language to ensure that they were effectively equipped to support student writing and therefore improve pupil attainment. To achieve this, the training resource LiLAC (Language in Learning Across the Curriculum, DECS) was used. This is a tool which breaks down the process of teaching language to students.

After going through the training, teachers created schemes of work that were trialled with students in 10 different schools in Primary, Secondary and Supplementary Schools. 260 students were supported through targeted booster sessions in English, maths, science and technology, with an additional 165 students supported in their classrooms.

Teachers’ knowledge and skills were increased to support the literacy and academic English language skills of non-EU EAL pupils. There was significantly improved attainment for non EU EAL pupils participating in the booster sessions by comparison to students in the control groups. The outcomes were increased pupil confidence, higher levels of attainment in both the subject covered and in English.
