London Urban Forest Partnership
The London Urban Forest Partnership is a network of organisations that collaborate to protect, manage and enhance the capital's trees and woodlands. It is jointly chaired by the Forestry Commission and the Greater London Authority and meets at least twice a year to share information and data, help inform tree related programmes in London and promote the benefits of the city's urban forest.
London’s population continues to grow, estimated as over 9 million people in 2025. It is important that we continue to care for existing trees, plant new trees and improve London’s green spaces. The aim of the Mayor is to increase tree canopy cover in London by 10 per cent from 2016 levels by 2050, to 23 per cent. Convening the London Urban Forest Partnership is a key mechanism, for the Mayor, to facilitate progress towards this objective.
You can read more about the Mayor's tree programme. Many of the tree planting and woodland projects in the Mayor's tree programme involve organisations in the London Urban Forest Partnership.
London Urban Forest Plan
In November 2020, the partnership published the London Urban Forest Plan (LUFP) which sets out three key aims and a set of goals to protect, expand and promote the capital’s trees and woodlands. The plan also identified 36 priority actions needed to deliver on these priorities.
In 2022, eight partners received funding from the Trees Call to Action Fund to accelerate delivery the LUFP over three years. Thanks to this and to the Partnership's wider implementation efforts, by early 2025 nearly 70% of the original LUFP actions were complete or well underway.
The Partnership has therefore identified a new set of 72 priorities for actions to further the delivery of the LUFP aims and goals, while also responding to changes in context and priorities. This updated work programme is captured in the LUFP Actions Update, published in February 2025.
