The Mayor Sadiq Khan wants to support teachers by making it easier and more affordable to teach and live in London.

We know the cost of housing can make it tough even for those with above-average incomes to live here, particularly long term.

That's why the Mayor is using his planning policy to secure more affordable homes for Londoners, and funding councils and housing associations to build them.

The Mayor is supporting delivery of council housing and social rented homes managed by housing associations. He's also supporting what are known as 'intermediate homes' for middle income Londoners, like teachers, who can't afford to buy a home on the open market and are struggling with private rents. They include:

  • London Shared Ownership - Londoners buy a share of a home from a housing association or local authority and pay low rent on the remaining unsold share. This option is for households with incomes of no more than £90k a year.
  • London Living Rent - Rents are set at around a third of average local incomes, giving tenants the opportunity to save for a deposit to buy a share of their home. London Living Rent homes are available to households with incomes of no more than £67k a year. Local councils and housing associations offering London Living Rent homes have their own application processes.

These homes are advertised on the Mayor's Homes for Londoners search platform.

Some London local councils also have their own application systems for those interested in intermediate homes.

The Mayor encourages local authorities and other housing providers to give key workers, including teachers, priority for intermediate homes, using his list of key worker occupations.

The Mayor is currently consulting on proposals for a new form of intermediate housing, Key Worker Living Rent homes, with rents linked to key workers' incomes.
