Wilbury Primary School 2019/20

Developing reading through high quality reading lessons and targeted intervention

What problems were in your school and how did you identify them?

We identified the need to improve children's reading fluency, their stamina and their ability to infer - especially for pupils with English as their second language and SEND.

What actions did you take?

We changed the way we taught reading; developing a whole class approach, focused on improving fluency and building stamina - we moved away from guided reading. Our success is largely down to the teachers' excellent assessment for learning within lessons and also their ability to target interventions, being reactive and fluid with under performing groups/individuals and targeting pupil progress as much as attainment.

What were the outcomes?

  • Results at secure: 2017, 69% 2018, 87% (2018 progress 4.9%)
  • Improved fluency, stamina and ability to infer.
