Valence Primary School
Develop a Mental Maths Scheme for Early Years Children
What problems were in your school and how did you identify them?
Entry data for EYFS was low, therefore accelerated progress was necessary to prepare children for KS1. Exit data showed progress in maths as lower than in other curriculum areas.
What actions did you take?
-Members of SLT completed the NPQSL project, focussed on improving EYFS maths.
-Identified target groups from entry data.
-Developed a layered assessment proforma and teaching pedagogy linked to Development Matters to identify gaps, current knowledge and skills.
-Developed a series of plans, resources and activities to support each ‘layer’ of learning including; lesson plan outlines, activities, parent support cards and homework packs.
-Held parent workshops.
-Trained all EYFS staff.
-Introduced daily mental maths sessions, based on the same philosophy as the school's phonics scheme, at Nursery and Reception level.
-Involved all EYFS staff in regular rigorous moderation, tracking and development of the new scheme. -Extended plans and resources to lead in Year 1.
What were the outcomes?
Exit data demonstrates a measurable improvement in EYFS maths outcomes and the quality of teaching judgements, sustained over 2 years.
