Timbercroft Primary School

Raising attainment through an inclusive education for all

What problems were in your school and how did you identify them?

Our lowest attaining pupils were not making expected progress across the key stages. We had many children that needed additional pastoral support before they could fully engage in learning.

What actions did you take?

We used pupil premium funding to employ sports coaches to take 1 session of PE per week. During this time the lowest attaining pupils worked with the class teacher on writing interventions in small groups. These children then had an additional PE session on a Friday. The teachers were supported with planning for lowest attaining pupils. We found our biggest challenge to be children needing additional mental health support. We trained our staff on anxiety, how to spot its signs in the classroom and strategies to use with the children. We used funding to open a free breakfast club for disadvantaged pupils to give them the best start to their day.

What were the outcomes?

We saw the percentage of children achieving 2 levels of progress rise from 35% to 85% in a year.
