Surrey Square 2018/19
Focus on personal and academic excellence, for everyone, every day
What problems were in your school and how did you identify them?
Low aspirations, very challenging home environments with very complex issues, which impacted on the children. Children has poor verbal skills and a range of personal, social and emotional developmental challenges.
What actions did you take?
We have an established culture based on our mission 'personal and academic excellence; everyone, every day'. We have developed robust and inspiring approaches to teaching personal excellence through our core values. The values (according to Ofsted) are the lifeblood of the school. We have taught a, progressive curriculum based on these values, as well as using an assessment framework to track progress. The emphasis on personal AS WELL AS academic success, has resulted in amazing outcomes.
We worked intensively with parents and families, and have excellent systems (we call provision mapping) to ensure that every child has the support and challenge to continually make progress in their learning. We used real world, project based learning approaches, to make learning relevant and purposeful.
What were the outcomes?
We are proud of our excellent test scores, but value brilliant pieces of art and performances too.
