Sudbourne Primary School

Turning our pupils in to "Talk A Lot Children"

What problems were in your school and how did you identify them?

We identified that low attaining children typically had low levels of communication/oracy skills resulting in difficulties in articulating their learning and even more importantly, their feelings.

What actions did you take?

1. All staff trained in importance of developing 'talk a lot' children

2. Literacy curriculum focus on poetry and performance, celebrated every week in assemblies

3. "Time for You" drop in informal counselling sessions for children to be heard and be supported emotionally

4. School priority - Emotional Health - provided children with the language to articulate their feelings

5. Whole school consistency in using key vocabulary, talking frame, and talk partner techniques in every lesson

6. Introduced Makaton signing (for high level SEN children) across the whole school

What were the outcomes?

-Children with SEN, EAL and EBD issues making excellent academic progress.

-Children more confident and outgoing.

Children’s self-esteem raised!
