St Thomas More Catholic Comprehensive

Quality first teaching

What problems were in your school and how did you identify them?

Small student groups were making less than expected progress. This was identified through the precise use of assessment data which informed accurate predictions.

What actions did you take?

We used a wide range of strategies (including PiXL strategies)

  • Raising attainment & progress (RAP) meetings
  • Subject specific small group interventions - within the classroom and out of lesson time
  • Reading for meaning interventions
  • Appropriate deployment of SEND support
  • Aspirational targets & high expectations of all learners
  • Pre-public examinations & results assemblies
  • Excellent teacher understanding of course requirements
  • Homework club provision for all students, and many more

What were the outcomes?

Our low prior attaining pupils made outstanding academic progress
