St Thomas the Apostle School and Sixth Form College 2018/19
Whole school improvements to pupil literacy to drive positive progress
What problems were in your school and how did you identify them?
Pupils' literacy rates upon arrival were low. These were identified through reading age tests. Numeracy rates also low, as shown in initial entry exams.
What actions did you take?
Whole school literacy programmes have involved whole staff training on how to incorporate literacy into schemes of work, including embedding and accountability of this programme.
The appointment of a literacy lead has ensured that the focus on literacy has had a sustained impact on pupils across the school, particularly for those with a lower starting point. This will have a bigger impact year on year.
What were the outcomes?
Focus on literacy has meant that our progress has improved dramatically, with a progress 8 score of 0.91.
