St Philomena's School

High aspirations/ ambitions for all students of all backgrounds

What problems were in your school and how did you identify them?

Our Pupil Premium (PP) students made less progress in some subjects than non-PP students. Students from certain ethnic backgrounds also made less progress. Some students we identified weren't engaging in offered support.

What actions did you take?

- Reviewed the student selection process for interventions and ensured PP-students received support more consistently.

- Implemented ‘Sixth Form Mentoring’ to support our students.

- Engaged parents in all aspects of their child’s school life.

- Employed additional teaching and support staff to reduce class sizes and improve attainment of our low attaining Year7 students. Planned for their integration into the secondary curriculum.

- Supported PP-students who are also SEND through specialised programmes.

- Adopted a more effective model for closer monitoring and supporting of students’ academic achievements and well-being through use of Learning Leads and Well-being Leads.

- Provided financial support towards curriculum based visits, music tuition and learning resources.

- Offered services like counselling and mentoring

What were the outcomes?

Our low attaining PP-students are engaged in their school life in general, as a result they make good progress.
