Outstanding teaching and learning for low ability pupils
What problems were in your school and how did you identify them?
A rigorous assessment system identified a variety of special educational needs. The school deprivation indicator is above average confirming that poverty creates barriers to learning for students.
What actions did you take?
We created a bespoke CPD programme for teachers that prioritised high class provision for pupils with low prior attainment. All resources were created in-house, were focused specifically on the needs of our pupils, and utilised educational research and Ofsted good practice. Themes of sessions were identified by senior leaders and covered, for example, SEND, the progress of Black Caribbean boys, pupils responding to teachers’ written feedback, and quality curriculum provision.
The half-termly sessions were focused on improving pupil outcomes. There was an expectation on teachers to reflect on current practice and to collaborate with others to improve further. Teachers shared good practice and improved their classroom practice as a result.
What were the outcomes?
The Progress 8 score for low ability pupils was +1.16, Attainment 8 was 36.2.
