St Antony's Catholic Primary 2018/19
Teaching and consolidating the basic skills systematically
What problems were in your school and how did you identify them?
Ensuring staff have the depth of knowledge to deliver the curriculum in core areas, particularly in English as 57% of pupils are EAL.
This was identified through assessments and surveys.
What actions did you take?
- Staff across EYFS and KS1 given in-depth phonics training externally, and continuous training in-house weekly (non-negotiable)
- Phonics taught systematically each day across EYFS and KS1, with rigorous tracking of pupils' progress. This was supported by hosting monthly parent workshops where the strategies and content were shared
- Additionally, we had a special focus on the teaching and the use of GPS as a tool to analyse and deconstruct any text type. This enabled pupils to garner a deeper understanding of any genre when reading and strengthened their comprehension and writing skills
What were the outcomes?
98% expected + in Reading.
98% expected + in Writing.
98% + in Maths- 98% in RWM.
97% GPS.
