Southwark Park School

Raising expectations and targeting support for LPA pupils

What problems were in your school and how did you identify them?

We recognised that a small group of disadvantaged children had a range of needs in terms of learning (including dyslexia), as well as social and emotional needs.

What actions did you take?

We carried out a series of actions to address these problems:

- training for our Learning Mentor in delivering Friendship Groups

- whole school training and commitment to PATHS programme (Promoting Alternative Thinking Strategies) to support children's social and emotional development

- whole school work on developing a spelling programme and targeted ARROW intervention

- employed third teacher in Year 6 so teaching was carefully matched to individuals' needs

- invested in Accelerated Reader programme to motivate habits around reading for pleasure

- planned individualised teaching programme for children with particularly complex needs

- delivered system of incentives (trips etc.) to reward children's persistence and commitment to learning

What were the outcomes?

Fewer episodes of poor behaviour;

Improved reading habits, core writing / spelling skills;

Accelerated progress in core subjects.
