Ravenor Primary School 2019/20

Promoting a love of reading and developing independent learners

What problems were in your school and how did you identify them?

Parental engagement - baseline survey to identify needs. A lack of opportunities to access a wide range of quality texts outside of school. Gap analysis and talking to children. Reading environment audit.

What actions did you take?

Supporting parents - with workshops on how to help their children at home, with a particular focus on reading and maths. This was also achieved through information and drop in session, lesson sharing and observations. Developing a love of reading - huge investment in quality texts for home reading and within the school and classroom libraries. After school book clubs and maths clubs. Increased the capacity for local visits, libraries and key landmarks in London. Whole school focus on reading CPD for staff, through guided reading and explicit vocabulary teaching. Trials of using a mastery approach to the teaching of maths and writing have been rolled out across the school. A key focus and priority on ensuring that the most vulnerable and low prior attaining children are confident and secure in using the four operations in maths.

What were the outcomes?

Pupil progress in reading, writing and maths in 2018 was above and well above the national average.
