Princess May Primary School
To improve standards of achievement for our disadvantaged pupils
What problems were in your school and how did you identify them?
Our staff recognised that low levels of language skills on entry, and throughout the school, were hindering the achievement of our disadvantaged pupils. Pupils were not achieving age expected standards.
What actions did you take?
A multi-pronged approach was taken. Launchpad for Language, a programme run by the school's Speech and Language therapist to support children's speech, language and communication skills, was commissioned in Nursery and Reception.
A new approach to reading was adopted in Key stage 2, which developed the use of language when talking about texts and books.
The school also developed our own curriculum, which ensured that all children went on trips to support their understanding of the topic and could talk about their own experiences using the correct vocabulary.
What were the outcomes?
An increase in the percentage of pupils from disadvantaged backgrounds achieving age expected skills across all key stages.
