Olga Primary School 2019/20
Focus on high quality teaching, learning and specific, tailored interventions
What problems were in your school and how did you identify them?
Many children with limited vocabulary and non-standard grammar. Difficulties with reasoning and comprehension. Many children are very passive learners, identified through teacher assessment and test analysis.
What actions did you take?
- CPD on active learning, involving all children, including oracy in all lessons, teaching specific language structures.
- Interventions follow on from outcomes during lessons, so that misconceptions and difficulties are addressed immediately by a teacher or TA. Adjusting teaching to fill gaps, supported by regular discussions with SLT.
- Increased emphasis on direct teaching of vocabulary and of reasoning and problem-solving.
- Training for teachers on NRich, bar modelling and other ways of increasing understanding and skills in maths.
- Use of concrete, pictorial, abstract when introducing new learning.
What were the outcomes?
Progress scores at end of KS2 increased year on year. In 2018, they were reading +5.2, writing +2.6, maths +5.2.
