Newport School 2018/19

Eliminating the Gaps for Disadvantaged Pupils

What problems were in your school and how did you identify them?

Data identified that the performance of disadvantaged pupils was significantly below non-disadvantaged pupils for reading, writing and maths at the end of KS2.

What actions did you take?

Through careful analysis of data sets, key gaps and targets were identified. These were then addressed by:

  • opening Study Breakfast for pupils in Years 4-6, focusing on closing gaps within learning, using key identification tools such subject gap analysis and bespoke intervention programmes
  • reducing the class size for the teaching of Maths, to allow pupils to receive focused and daily teacher feedback
  • inviting pupils to Saturday School, where key gaps and targets were addressed
  • offering small group mentoring for disadvantaged boys, where they had the opportunity to develop confidence, self- esteem and aspirations through enriched activities
  • introducing LAMDA, an enrichment programme to develop pupils' confidence and oracy skills. Pupils' recited and performed poetry and prose

What were the outcomes?

Disadvantaged pupils were significantly above the national averages for progress and attainment in all subjects; top 3 per cent nationally.
