Menorah Primary School

To provide an inclusive environment for children with special needs

What problems were in your school and how did you identify them?

We have a high proportion of children with complex needs, particularly those on the ADD and ADHD spectrum, whose behaviour was impacting on the learning environment of their peers.

What actions did you take?

-We ran training sessions for all staff led by a specialist autism teacher, to make them aware of various systems that We would be using in the school.

-We outlined key triggers that teachers need to be aware of, and strategies appropriate for the needs of identified pupils with complex behaviour.

-We devised social skills intervention groups to work alongside pupils with complex needs, in order to raise their awareness and provide them with coping strategies.

-We worked closely with parents to share our model and to provide ongoing feedback.

-We trained key learning support assistants to work on a one to one basis when necessary.

-We offered specialised counselling from psychotherapists and behaviour management teachers.

What were the outcomes?

We closed the gap between the attainment of low achieving students and their peers. We developed individual programmes and visual timetables.
