Lark Hall Primary School 2019/20
Personal and social character development through 'Building Learning Power'
What problems were in your school and how did you identify them?
Children with a range of barriers, as well as low starting points. We wanted to find a means to raise all children's aspirations, engagement and academic attainment.
What actions did you take?
- Development of our 'personal social and character development' curriculum where children learn positive character traits through cross curricular, topic based learning.
- Becoming a 'Building Learning Power' school where children are taught the process of learning and how to be a good learner - for instance embracing challenges through perseverance.
- Embedding the 'Zones of Regulation' to support children in regulating their emotions and giving them the language to identify how to be in the right 'zone' for learning.
- Carefully crafted staff training to ensure children's attitudes to learning were being developed alongside academic subjects.
- Investment in Speech and Language therapy, including becoming a 'communication friendly school'.
What were the outcomes?
Children are empowered to tackle new/difficult learning using their learning 'muscles', resulting in higher academic attainment.
