Keir Hardie Primary School
Inspiring Excellence for Disadvantaged Pupils
What problems were in your school and how did you identify them?
Our staff recognised through both formative and summative assessment that our disadvantaged pupils in Yr3, Yr4, and Yr6 were disengaged in writing.
What actions did you take?
We targeted these year groups as they had the highest proportion of disadvantaged pupils in the school. This was achieved through strengthening quality first teaching. Our team explored the idea of creating stimulating hooks for writing, so that pupils would be engaged in the process. We used pupil premium funding to arrange educational visits to Shrek Land, Lambourne End, Lego Land and Cambridge University to inspire and instil a passion for writing. Our Yr6 pupils were encouraged by university students to produce a mini thesis/essay as part of the Brilliant Club project. This gave our pupils the opportunity to witness first hand that universities like Oxbridge are within reach, if they aim for excellence and have high expectations for themselves.
What were the outcomes?
The results of this impacted on outcomes in writing, particularly for Yr6 pupils who exceeded national expectations.
