John Ruskin Primary School and Language Classes
Improving outcomes for children with poor communication skills
What problems were in your school and how did you identify them?
Children enter EYFS with poor communication and language skills, significantly below age expectations. This impacted on their attainment outcomes in all areas.
What actions did you take?
- Use of additional adults in the foundation stage to provide opportunities for small group work and targeted interventions with communication and language skills.
- Additional groups for English and maths lessons in key stage 1 & 2. These provided opportunities for more focused small group teaching for the low attaining children with more opportunities for discussion.
- Targeted intervention programmes in key stage 1 & 2 which focus on identified key gaps in learning, managed by a dedicated interventions coordinator.
What were the outcomes?
Improvement in attainment and progress at all levels.
Outcomes above national averages at the end of key stage 2
