Improving Reading Outcomes at Key Stage 2
What problems were in your school and how did you identify them?
Historic underachievement, poor previous teaching and a legacy of underachievement.
What actions did you take?
Having previously had very poor results in Reading at KS2 and being below national in Summer 2015, the school became part of a pilot reading program for Hackney (now known as Destination Reader) in September 2015. The school overhauled its reading provision by implementing a discrete teaching of reading session for 45 minutes a day. This involved training up all staff to be able to deliver the approach and giving over 45 minutes of the daily timetable. It was identified early on that the school's implementation of the program was exemplary and the school became a hub school (the only one in the borough of Hackney) for the teaching of reading. The school now hosts half termly visits from schools around the UK.
What were the outcomes?
In Summer 2016 the KS2 reading outcomes were 16% higher the national average and in 2017, 24% higher.
