The Thinking School - Developing a Dynamic Learning Community

What problems were in your school and how did you identify them?

Many of our children come into the setting with low levels of communication and language skills, and we wanted to develop our children's self-esteem as confident, empowered learners.

What actions did you take?

We have developed a dynamic expansive learning environment which promotes learning for all. We believe that the greatest influence on our children's learning is the quality of teaching, and the greatest influence on the quality of teaching is the quality of teacher learning. We therefore focus our energies on learning activities for our staff that enable them to develop as empowered, confident teachers. All staff have engaged in collaborative action research projects, including peer learning and lesson studies, to transform the teaching of reading, writing and maths. Skilled teachers are now implementing a personalised learning experience for each learner to meet individual needs. Dialogic and metacognitive skills are modelled by adults for children to enable thinking and learning.

What were the outcomes?

87% of children achieved expected standard in Reading, Writing, Maths and progress in line with top 2% of schools.
