Highlands Primary School 2018/19

Raising wellbeing, aspirations and outcomes for our most vulnerable children

What problems were in your school and how did you identify them?

We identified a cohort of children with a range of complex needs. The lowest attaining 30% of children were not making sufficient progress in learning, because of those needs.

What actions did you take?

We employed a whole school approach to developing and raising pupil outcomes for all children in the core subject areas.

We believe that the greatest single factor that impacts upon the quality of pupil learning is the quality of teaching, and the greatest single factor that impacts upon the quality of teaching is the quality of teacher professional learning.

All teachers have engaged in collaborative action research projects, including peer learning and lesson studies, to transform the teaching of reading, writing and maths across the school.

Skilled teachers are now implementing a personalised learning experience for each learner to meet individual needs. All teaching is based on dialogic teaching practices that ensure children's talk is central to learning.

What were the outcomes?

86% of children achieved the expected standard in reading, writing and maths, including 97% in maths alone.
