Increasing attainment for Lower Attaining Pupils

What problems were in your school and how did you identify them?

Our staff recognised that in this year group there were a significant number of lower attaining children at the end of KS1 who were not working at the age-related level.

What actions did you take?

We looked at the individual needs of each lower attaining child. We adapted our planning to fully engage these pupils, using pupil premium funding to provide extra-curricular activities (from after school clubs, to trips to museums) to inspire and motivate them. We identified a number of children who needed further emotional support, and assigned them a learning mentor. They worked with pupils to enable them to deal with setbacks, and not be put off by work they found initially difficult. We also recognised the numeracy and literacy skills the children were lacking and put them into small groups, where they worked with a specialised teaching assistant to enable them to access the curriculum in their year group.

What were the outcomes?

The LPA children, from KS1 to KS2, made average progress of 6.4pts above what was expected in Maths and reading.
