Harris Girls' Academy East Dulwich 2018/19

Focus on literacy- everything else follows

What problems were in your school and how did you identify them?

- High proportion of EAL learners

- Significant numbers of girls with weak reading skills and other speech and language issues, as evidenced in their reading tests on entry

What actions did you take?

We employ a specialist speech and language therapist 3 days per week, who works with small groups of students and also our teachers. This means we can ensure the delivery of first class lessons across the academy with a focus on literacy, language and communication.

Small group work, following an assessment battery, is specifically targeted to areas of need, so that 'short burst' work of ten sessions can have a significant impact on progress.

Our reading mentor scheme pairs younger, struggling readers with older mentors, who read daily with them and support homework. Finally, our dyslexia specialist supports identified students throughout their time here.

What were the outcomes?

Outstanding outcomes for low prior attainers: Progress 8 score of 1.91 (sig + top 10%) for this group
