Essendine Primary School
There is no ceiling to achievement
What problems were in your school and how did you identify them?
Low attainment and progress had affected groups of pupils, particularly those in receipt of pupil premium.
What actions did you take?
We revised the curriculum for the entire school with the ethos that there was no ceiling to achievement. High expectations were set for all groups of pupils. We ensured that tight targets were set and regularly reviewed - teacher accountability was of the utmost importance. We used our pupil premium spending primarily to decrease class sizes. Extra teachers were employed in most year groups. The effect was that pupils' needs could be more easily addressed and achievement rose rapidly. Pupil premium funding was also used to provide interventions where there were gaps in pupils' prior knowledge.
What were the outcomes?
We are now in the top 3% of schools nationally for progress, and in the top 10% for attainment.
