Elm Park Primary School
Getting It Right For Every Child
What problems were in your school and how did you identify them?
Using internal school data tracking, Free School Meal pupils and white British boys were identified as low attainers, and pupils who made less progress.
What actions did you take?
We reviewed and revised our Literacy core text approach, to ensure that both boys and girls were engaged. We also used interventions such as Literacy Lego to appeal to boys who were hard to engage in writing.
We implemented Accelerated Progress in Learning Sequences – a 2-3 week intervention to close gaps in lower attaining pupils’ learning - these targeted children then made much more rapid progress in all areas.
We used our Pupil Premium funding to support extra teachers and HLTAs so these pupils could work in smaller, targeted focus groups.
In order to meet the needs of all our pupils' needs we focused on a number of key aspects; firstly on relationships, using the 'Restorative Approach' to deal with positive behaviour and relationships throughout the whole school.
We also created a smaller nurture group setting 'The Tree House' for lower attaining pupils who were identified as having poor self-esteem as a barrier to their learning and organised and implemented an alternative curriculum and pastoral support programme for such pupils to attend and work on for up to 3 terms.
What were the outcomes?
Targeted pupils made accelerated progress in all areas, and now show high levels of enthusiasm and engagement in their learning.
