Targeted Learning Time - Individual Needs Matter
What problems were in your school and how did you identify them?
Many of the children within our community have multiple educational, social and aspirational needs. This is identified through academic data, pupil and parent feedback, attendance, pastoral systems and community information.
What actions did you take?
Following staff consultation, it was agreed the biggest obstacle to meeting our most vulnerable children’s needs was time! Therefore, we restructured our approach so that every week all class teachers are released to work with children who they feel will benefit from more targeted intervention. Sometimes this is in pairs or small groups, sometimes 1:1 going across the ability range. It’s the teacher’s choice. Time for additional input, feedback and discussion helps close gaps before they grow bigger. It’s time efficient and enables consistent support to take place. Teachers use TLT books to note work undertaken and these are subsequently shared with all staff so effective pedagogical practice is built upon and any whole school issues brought to light.
What were the outcomes?
Disadvantaged pupils make strong academic progress so that combined outcomes are in line with their non-disadvantaged peers and above national.
